The high resolution optics of the Samyang XP 85mm F1.2 prime lens have been specifically designed to meet the extreme capabilities of Canon’s professional cameras. This superior full frame portrait-length lens provides a 28.52° field of view for Canon Full Frame DSLRs or an18.98° field of view with a 136mm equivalent focal length on Canon APS-C models.

A pair of high refractive index elements along with one aspherical element is used to reduce distortions and spherical aberrations to deliver a high degree of clarity and sharpness. Samyang Ultra Multi-Coating and the removable lens hood are employed to suppress ghosting and flare and provide increased contrast and color fidelity.

The Samyang XP 85mm F1.2 also sports an exceptionally fast f/1.2 maximum aperture to provide enhanced low light capability, faster shutter speeds and super shallow depth field for selective focus effects. Additionally the smooth, quiet and precise manual focus control provides close focusing as close as 31", and the sleek aluminum alloy housing is both lightweight and durable to benefit handling as well as improved durability.

  • Provides exceedingly high quality stills and video with both Canon Full Frame and APS-C (crop sensor) cameras
  • Its large F1.2 aperture provides enhanced low light capability, faster shutter speeds and super shallow depth field control.
  • Two High Refractive Index lens elements plus a precision aspherical lens element combine to minimize aberrations and increase sharpness.
  • Its all metal construction with an ergonomically designed shape and grip deliver a luxurious look, excellent durability and comfortable use.

How can this be this good wide open?

It's a manual focus lens so I won't be using it on my old 5DII but on my new RP it's a dream. Sharp, Zero CA and Zero LoCA. The background is creamy and the pictures are saturated. I love this lens. It is niche, not an all purpose lens but for isolating a subject and rendering it beautifully, it's really, really good.

YIKES

This is the most comically large, practical range, lens I have ever seen, & I owned the Sony 135 GM. This thing has the same weight as the canon 70-200 f/2.8, except is shorter.I’m also shooting it on the Canon 1v DSLR so I’m walking around with Prius hanging off my neck strap…. You will 100% NEED a shoulder harness for this, unless you have a neck like a young Mike Tyson. The lens quality is…. Well I’m shooting film so sharpness is not my concern but its top sharp, not as sharp as it it could be at this price.I have a voigtlander f/1.2 on my Sony a7III that is as good as any G-Master. I bought it used for about the same price as this, but that’s voigtlander & this is Samyang so it’s no contest. The price, image quality, & the speed of the lens make it hard to pass up. But the size and weight make it a near deal breaker, unless you need or want the outrageous bokeh this produces. You could get an autofocus 85 f/1.8 for $400. Is 90% more light that important??? ABSOLUTELY!!!! Especially when the 85 f/1.4 with AF is twice the price or more.Shooting film at night is RUFF!!!! As is lugging this behemoth around all day. But thats the price you pay with canon DSLR’s. I say it’s worth it if your shooting film

Need strength training to carry this baby around

When Carl Zeiss publicly claimed that an Asian company stole their design, stop what you are doing and buy one when you can - unless money isn’t an issue for you :)This lens is extremely difficult to use if you don’t have a split focus screen, at f1.2 or f1.4, even a further object wouldn’t be so forgiving. But when you do it right, it’s extremely rewarding - the quality even wide open is absolutely extraordinary, not to mention the extra workout you’ll achieve just to carry it around with a full frame camera body :)Enjoy.

Update!!! Please read! For those using the R5 (and R6), do NOT update the firmware at this time if you plan on using this lens as is makes a concerning noise when you’re not shooting at f/1.2. Anything past 1.2 is causing a noise (1.4, 1.8, 2, etc…) makes a clicking noise while focusing and shooting. It was NOT making that noise prior to updating my firmware to 1.5.The Samyang 85mm f/1.2 is great! There is a level of sharpness that this lens has that can only be matched by Canon’s 85mm f/1.2. I am using this with the new Canon R5 (with an adaptor), and it is performing wonderfully, handling like an RF lens. The manual focus assist that the R5 has built into it, has helped immensely! The Samyang 85mm f/1.2 has built in firmware that allows it to be read as a native lens to the Canon. As a matter of fact, when I connected it and searched for it on the camera, I was able to take advantage of all of the features that canon has to offer it’s native lenses. I, at first, was having some issues with this lens. I was focusing well, however, I wanted the imagines to be sharper especially wide open (because that’s why you buy this lens is to shoot wide open), Then I started playing with the software built into my Canon R5 and was able to find all the information about the Samyang lens. At first I was confused, because the camera stated that a Canon lens was connected to the camera. I checked online and found that the SP series has the firmware to be corrected by the camera! With that said, I checked a few things and found I was able to do the following with it:1.Manual focus assist2. Highlight beam assist (which allows you to have a Blue/Red/Yellow coloring around whatever is in focus)3. Red beam assist (which fires a red bean to detect the correct focal distance)4. Chromatic aberration assist (which to help reduce the amount of chromatic aberration while shooting wide open at f/1.2)5. low noise features that are build into the camera (and many other features most of which that are reserved for the RF lenses)If you can deal with a full-time manual focus lens that doesn’t have imagine stabilization, and can be heavy if you’re not using both hands (oh and it also collects dust on the rubber focus ring, but that this turns smoothly), then this is the lens for you! The level of detail that you can get with this lens (especially being able to use all of those other features built into the camera), make this lens second only to the Canon 85mm f/1.2 RF (only due to that lens having Auto focus and weather sealing!), however the difference in the money that you’re saving at $699 in comparison to $2,799 (and a few hundred more for the DS version), go nuts and buy the Samyang 85mm f/1.4 RF with auto focus and weather sealing at $699, the Canon 24-105mm f/4 with auto focus, weather sealing and image stabilization for $1099, or whatever Sigma lens you want, and treat yourself to a very fancy dinner all for about the same price lol.
